Why almost every trip starts here

Nearly two-thirds of Iceland's population lives in the greater Reykjavik area, and it's where Keflavík Airport transfers, most car rentals, and the vast majority of day tours all originate. Even travelers planning a full Ring Road loop typically spend their first and last nights here.

Getting around the region

Central Reykjavik is walkable (see our full Things to Do in Reykjavik guide), and the Strætó public bus network covers the wider capital area reasonably well. For day trips into the surrounding region — the Golden Circle, Reykjanes Peninsula, or the Blue Lagoon — you'll want either a rental car or a seat on one of the many scheduled small-group tours departing daily from downtown pickup points.

What's within easy reach

• The Golden Circle — Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, roughly 1.5–2 hours from the city, doable as a half-day-to-full-day trip.
• The Blue Lagoon — about 45 minutes toward Keflavík, easily combined with an airport transfer.
• Reykjanes Peninsula — lesser-visited lava fields, geothermal areas and coastline close to the airport, good for a layover or a quieter alternative to the busier Golden Circle crowds.
• Whale watching — departing directly from the Old Harbour, no travel required beyond the harbour itself.

When to base yourself here longest

If you're not renting a car, Reykjavik works well as a full-trip base — day tours from the city reach most of the Southwest's major highlights without you ever needing to drive. If you are renting a car for a longer loop, 1–2 nights bookending the trip is typical, with the middle of your itinerary spent elsewhere on the island.
