Why Vík matters more than its size suggests

With a population of a few hundred people, Vík í Mýrdal is tiny — but its position, roughly 2.5-3 hours from Reykjavik and right at the point where most South Coast day trips turn back, makes it the natural overnight stop for anyone continuing further along the Ring Road, or simply not wanting to rush the drive back to the capital in one day. What's actually in the village

Vík itself is small enough to see on foot in well under an hour — a supermarket, a handful of cafes and restaurants, a gas station, and Víkurkirkja, the village's red-roofed church on a hill overlooking the coastline, one of the most photographed small churches in Iceland thanks to its setting above the black sand shore.

What's just outside town

The real draw is what surrounds Vík rather than the village itself: Reynisfjara black sand beach and its basalt columns sit a few minutes' drive away (see our dedicated Reynisfjara guide for full details, including important safety notes), and Dyrhólaey promontory, with its rock arch and seasonal puffin colonies, is a similarly short drive in the other direction.

Why stay overnight here

Practical notes

• Accommodation and restaurant options are limited relative to demand — book ahead for summer visits, more so than the village's small size might suggest.
• Vík is the last real services stop (fuel, supermarket) before a long, sparser stretch of road heading further east — worth topping up here if you're continuing on.
• Weather here can differ noticeably from Reykjavik given the more exposed coastal position — check conditions specifically for this stretch before setting out, particularly in winter.
