Iceland's Southwest corner concentrates an unusual amount of the country's most famous scenery within 1-3 hours of the capital, which is exactly why so many first-time visitors never rent a car at all — day tours and short self-drives from Reykjavik cover a genuinely representative sample of the country without requiring a multi-day loop. Golden Circle: the classic first choice

South Coast: the longest, most rewarding full day
Slightly further and more demanding as a single day (especially without a car, where a tour typically runs 10-12 hours including hotel pickup), but the density of famous sights — Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara — makes it worth the extra driving for most visitors with a full day to spare.
Reykjanes: the underrated short option
If you're short on time — a layover, an early departure, a half-day gap — Reykjanes delivers genuinely dramatic volcanic scenery closer to the airport than either of the routes above, without needing to commit a full day.
Snæfellsnes: best if you want variety over density
Rather than concentrating on a handful of iconic single sights, Snæfellsnes rewards you with a broader cross-section of Icelandic landscape in one loop — worth choosing over the Golden Circle or South Coast if you've already done those on a previous trip, or specifically want the "Iceland in miniature" variety.
Combining trips or choosing one
Can you do two in one trip?
With 4-5 days in Reykjavik, doing both the Golden Circle and South Coast as separate day trips (rather than trying to combine them into one long day) generally gives a better experience than rushing both into a single marathon outing. Reykjanes pairs naturally with an arrival or departure day, given its proximity to the airport.
