Our Ring Road planning guide covers the big-picture decisions — how long to budget, which direction to drive. This page breaks the loop into individual stages with approximate driving times between them, so you can actually build a day-by-day schedule rather than guessing at distances on a map. Times below are driving time only, in good summer conditions, and don't include stops — add generously for photos, meals, short walks and the inevitable slower-than-expected rural roads.

Turning this into a day-by-day plan
A realistic 10-day version
Day 1: Reykjavik & Golden Circle. Day 2: South Coast to Vík. Day 3: Vík to Jökulsárlón. Day 4: Jökulsárlón to Höfn (short driving day, glacier activities). Day 5: Höfn through the Eastfjords toward Egilsstaðir. Day 6: Egilsstaðir, Stuðlagil Canyon detour. Day 7: Egilsstaðir to Mývatn. Day 8: Mývatn to Akureyri. Day 9: Akureyri toward Snæfellsnes, overnight on the peninsula. Day 10: Snæfellsnes to Reykjavik, departure prep.
This mirrors the shape covered in our general itinerary guide, with actual driving times attached to each leg so you can see where the long days fall — notably the Höfn-to-Egilsstaðir and Akureyri-to-Snæfellsnes stretches, both worth treating as full driving days rather than padding with extra stops.
Why these numbers are approximate, not exact
Icelandic road conditions vary with weather far more than distance alone suggests — the same 100 km stretch can take 20% longer in wind, rain or winter conditions. Treat every figure above as a best-case baseline, check current conditions before each day's drive, and build in buffer time rather than planning back-to-back stages with no slack.
