Why this region is worth a stop

The Reykjanes Peninsula surrounds Keflavík Airport, which means almost every visitor to Iceland drives through part of it without stopping — a missed opportunity, since it packs in raw lava fields, active geothermal areas and dramatic coastline within a short drive of arrival or departure. It's also seen genuine volcanic activity in recent years, with several eruptions in the area putting the region's geology on very current display.

The Bridge Between Continents

A small footbridge crossing a visible fissure between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates — largely symbolic (the real plate boundary is far wider and more diffuse than a single bridge), but a fun, easy stop that makes the abstract idea of continental drift feel tangible, especially combined with the similar rift visible at Þingvellir on the Golden Circle.

Geothermal areas

Reykjanes has its own steaming, bubbling geothermal fields similar in character to Hverir in the north (see our geothermal areas guide) — a good alternative if your route doesn't extend to North Iceland but you still want to see this side of Icelandic geology.

Practical use: airport layovers and short trips

Good for tight schedules

Reykjanes is the natural choice if you have a long layover, an early flight the next morning, or simply want to see something dramatic without committing significant driving time. Most of the peninsula's highlights sit within 20–40 minutes of the airport, considerably closer than the Golden Circle or South Coast.

Getting around

A rental car is the practical way to see Reykjanes — public transport coverage is thin, and the appeal is largely about stopping at scattered lava fields and coastal viewpoints rather than following a single fixed route. It combines naturally with a Blue Lagoon visit, which sits within the same peninsula.
